Highlights

River Oyunuma Natural Footbath is one of the most unique attractions in Noboribetsu, Hokkaido, Japan. During winter, it becomes a must-visit destination where travelers can soak their feet in a natural hot spring stream while surrounded by a peaceful snow-covered landscape.

Unlike indoor onsens, Oyunuma offers a closer connection to nature and a truly relaxing outdoor experience.

The River Oyunuma Natural Footbath is located about a 10–15 minute walk from Oyunuma Pond, a volcanic sulfur lake in the Noboribetsu Onsen area. Warm mineral water flows out of the lake and runs through the forest, forming a shallow stream with a comfortable temperature suitable for foot soaking.

In winter, temperatures in Noboribetsu often fall below 0°C, and snow blankets the surrounding forest. The contrast between the cold air and the warm water makes this spot especially memorable for visitors traveling to Hokkaido.

The Footbath Experience

Visitors simply sit along the wooden edge of the stream, remove their shoes, and place their feet directly into the flowing hot spring water. The water temperature usually ranges between 38–42°C (100–108°F) — warm enough to relax without being too hot.

At first, you feel warmth in your feet, and gradually your whole body begins to warm up. After about 10–15 minutes, most visitors notice reduced fatigue, especially after long walks in the cold weather.

Hot spring bathing is an important part of Japanese culture, and mineral-rich water is commonly believed to:

  • Relax muscles
  • Improve blood circulation
  • Reduce tiredness
  • Help the body stay warm in winter

Winter Scenery

The highlight of River Oyunuma Natural Footbath is the atmosphere. The stream flows quietly through a forest covered in snow, creating a calm and almost silent environment, broken only by the gentle sound of running water.

Steam rises from the warm stream into the freezing air, producing a picturesque winter scene. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to visit, when the light is softer and the area is less crowded.

Visitor Tips

  • Bring a small towel to dry your feet
  • Wear non-slip shoes (paths can be icy)
  • Limit soaking time to about 10–20 minutes
  • Do not use soap or contaminate the water
  • The footbath is completely free and open to the public.

Why You Should Visit

River Oyunuma Natural Footbath is not a luxury attraction — it is a place to slow down and feel the essence of Hokkaido’s winter: snow, forest, steam, and silence. It offers a local experience that many large cities in Japan cannot provide.

If you plan to visit Noboribetsu or travel around Hokkaido in winter, this small stop will likely become one of the most memorable moments of your trip.
