When cherry blossoms in Tokyo are still in their “winter dormancy,” Kawazu has already entered its most vibrant flowering season of the year. Kawazu Sakura bloom earlier than most varieties, with large, thick petals and a deep pink color, creating a scene that feels distinctly different from the traditional late-March cherry blossom season.

Key Destinations & Experiences
1. Kawazu

Kawazu Sakura are known for their large blossoms, thick petals, and deeper pink color compared to standard cherry varieties. More than 800 trees are planted along both sides of the Kawazu River, forming an easy and pleasant walking route. The blossoms reflect on the river’s surface, and together with the crisp early-spring air, the scenery feels noticeably different from late-March cherry blossom viewing.
2. Walking along the Kawazu River

The riverside path is wide and comfortable for walking, photography, and sightseeing. Small local food stalls line parts of the route, adding a relaxed, festival-like atmosphere. Morning is the best time to visit, when the light brings out the flowers’ colors and the area remains relatively uncrowded.
3. Hakone – Owakudani Volcanic Valley

Owakudani is an active volcanic area where white steam rises from cracks in the ground. The dramatic landscape is one of Hakone’s defining features. Visitors can also try the famous black eggs, boiled in natural hot spring water—an experience closely associated with the area.
Small Note
It is recommended to depart early in the morning to take advantage of the best light, when the blossoms show their richest color and photos come out clear and vibrant. Even during peak season, visiting in the morning keeps the Kawazu River area relatively spacious and easy to explore.
