Below is a suggested short trip itinerary for travelers who want to experience a typical Japanese winter, combining snowy landscapes, hot springs (onsen), and well-known attractions in the Miyagi–Yamagata area, accessible from Tokyo.
Time:
Depart:
Vehicle: Day 1: Tokyo – Zao Fox Village – Ginzan Onsen
Depart from Tokyo in the morning by Shinkansen to the Tohoku region, then continue by bus or taxi to Zao Fox Village.
Zao Fox Village is a semi-natural sanctuary home to hundreds of foxes. Visitors can observe several species such as red foxes, platinum foxes, and Arctic foxes. In Japanese culture, foxes are associated with Inari Okami — the deity of agriculture, prosperity, and rice, and are considered symbolic animals in many shrines.

After visiting the village, continue to Ginzan Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture. This hot spring town is known for its traditional wooden ryokan lining a small river. The multi-story buildings reflect Taisho-era architecture, and in winter the roofs, bridges, and streets are covered with snow, creating one of the most recognizable winter scenes in Japan.

In the evening, check in at a ryokan, rest, and enjoy the onsen bath.
Day 2: Mount Zao – Skiing – Onsen – Return to Tokyo
In the morning, travel to Zao Onsen Ski Resort.

During winter, Mount Zao is famous for the “Snow Monsters” (Juhyo) — trees heavily covered with ice and snow, forming large, unusual shapes. The phenomenon occurs when cold winds from Siberia carry moisture that freezes onto trees at high elevations.
Activities available at Zao include:
- Ropeway ride for panoramic snowy mountain views
- Skiing and other snow activities
- Bathing in Zao Onsen hot springs
After sightseeing and resting, return to the train station and travel back to Tokyo in the afternoon or evening.
Highlights of the trip
- Observe foxes in a semi-natural environment at Zao Fox Village
- Overnight stay at Ginzan Onsen hot spring town
- View the rare “Snow Monster” phenomenon at Mount Zao
- Experience winter sports and traditional onsen bathing
This itinerary is most suitable from December to early March, when snow conditions in the Zao area are stable and winter activities are fully operational.
