Kawazu is a small town on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, widely known for the Kawazu cherry blossom (Kawazu-zakura) variety. It is one of the first places in Japan where sakura season begins, typically blooming from early February instead of late March like most regions.
Kawazu-zakura has a distinctive deep pink color and a long blooming period of about 3–4 weeks. Because of this, Kawazu is a popular choice for visitors who want to see cherry blossoms while it is still winter in Tokyo or Kyoto.

Vehicle: Thousands of cherry trees line the banks of the Kawazu River for several kilometers. During peak bloom, the entire riverside turns pink, combined with surrounding hills and the coastal climate of the Izu Peninsula to create a characteristic early-spring landscape. Mornings are usually less crowded and convenient for sightseeing, while late afternoon offers sunset views along the blossoms.

Visitors can also walk along the river, explore local food stalls, and browse seasonal specialty markets set up during the blooming period.
Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival 2026

The annual Kawazu Sakura Matsuri takes place during the blooming season and attracts both domestic and international visitors. At night, parts of the riverside are illuminated, allowing for evening blossom viewing (yozakura).
Location: Kawazu Town, Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
Why Kawazu stands out
